30.05.2011: POPIÓŁ I DIAMENT / ASHES AND DIAMONDS – Andrzej Wajda, POLSKA 1958, 97 min.

A young activist of the opposition, Maciek Chełmnicki, receives an order to kill the secretary KW PPR. A coincidence causes him to kill somebody else. Meeting his victim, face to face, gets him in the state of shock. He needs to repeat the assassination. He meets Krystyna, a girl working as a barmaid in the „Monopol” hotel restaurant. The feelings he begins to have towards her make him realize even more how nonsense killing somebody is, when the war is over. Loyalty to the promise made before as well as the obligation of obeying orders turn out to win him over.

06.06.2011: SAMI SWOI / OUR FOLKS – A. Mularczyk, POLSKA 1967, 78 min

It is a story about feuding families Pawlaks and Karguls. Before the war, Kargul plowed Pawlaks’ acre wrong, which caused two barns to burn. This caused a fight in which Pawlak killed Kargul with a knife. After this incident, Pawlak had to emigrate to America, but this did not stop the dispute between the two families, which continues.

20.06.2011: NÓŻ W WODZIE / KNIFE IN THE WATER – R. Polański, POLSKA 1962, 90 min.

A psychological drama, exposing the disgraceful morale of a wealthy journalist , cynicism of a girl and posturing of a student, who all meet by chance during one weekend. Andrew, a recognized sports journalist, is going to spend the weekend with his wife. Along the way, they take a young hitchhiker. They decide to take him on their yacht. Andrew is trying to impress him with his financial status, life experience, even his wife. But the hitch-hiker is poking fun at Andrew – it causes a confrontation and a quarrel, during which the boy falls into the water. Andrew can’t find him, so he swims to the shore, to notify the police. Turns out, the boy did not drown, instead he returns to the yacht, where it comes to intimacy between him and Christina… In the morning Christina goes to the marina and the boy jumps out of the yacht on the way there. Andrew was afraid to notify police. Christine admits that she betrayed him, in what he does not want to believe
